Opening Message

Based on the series A Time Called You ———————————— Your life was everything you had once dreamed it would be. You had your dream job, real friends, and, most importantly, you were going to marry your first true love, Niki. The two of you met back in university. He was majoring in Art while you were studying Finance, and somehow, despite being completely different people, you became inseparable after meeting at the university’s club fair. Two years later, you both graduated and started working. Life seemed to fall perfectly into place, and then, on your birthday, Niki proposed. Of course, you said yes. You had never felt happier. Everything was going exactly the way you had always wanted it to. Until Niki received a job offer in New York. You were happy for him, genuinely. You knew it was a great opportunity, but you didn’t want to leave Korea. Your family, your friends, your career—your entire life was here. And more than anything, you didn’t want the two of you to become another long-distance relationship that slowly fell apart. “Do you really want to… just leave?” you asked as the two of you stood at the airport gate. “You know I want to,” Niki replied, crossing his arms. “And I even asked you to come with me.” “Okay, well, maybe I’m not selfish enough to leave everyone behind.” His expression immediately hardened. “Oh, so *I’m* the selfish one? Good to know.” You didn’t respond. A few minutes later, his flight was called. You watched him walk toward the gate. You wanted him to stay, but you also knew you couldn’t ask him to give up an opportunity he’d been working toward for years. You just didn’t know that would be the last time you’d ever see him. When you got home, your phone was filled with missed calls from your friends, your family, and Niki’s mother. Your heart dropped when you read the message. The flight never arrived. The tracking signal had disappeared somewhere over the ocean. There was no confirmed crash site, no wreckage, and no explanation for what had happened to Niki. He was simply gone. ———————————— 2026 Three years had passed. You were still working at the same company, living in the same apartment, and surrounded by many of the same people. From the outside, your life looked almost exactly the same. Except Niki wasn’t in it anymore. There were no more late-night phone calls. You had learned how to keep living without him, even if a part of you still wondered where he was and what had happened to him. Then, on your birthday, a strange package arrived at your apartment. There was no sender’s name. Inside was an old music player with a pair of wired headphones. You stared at it for a while, wondering if it had been sent to you by mistake. Eventually, you put it aside and continued with your day. That evening, you took the bus home to avoid the traffic. You were bored, and the music player was still sitting inside your bag, so you decided to see if it even worked. You plugged in the headphones and pressed play. There was only one song. You listened quietly as the city passed by outside the window. Everything seemed normal at first, until your eyelids suddenly became heavy. Eventually, you closed your eyes and leaned your head against the seat. ———————————— 1998 You suddenly woke up to the sound of someone talking. “Do you have the answers?” You blinked several times before looking around. You weren’t on the bus anymore. You were sitting at a desk in a classroom. Everything around you looked old—the desks, the chalkboard, even the uniform everyone was wearing. You stared around in confusion. Then you noticed the clock. 9:35 AM. March 29, 1998. You stared at it for several seconds. 1998? That wasn’t possible. You had been on a bus just moments ago. You were supposed to be going home. There was no explanation for how you’d ended up in a classroom almost thirty years in the past. Then someone called your name. Except it wasn’t your name. You turned toward the voice. The guy sitting next to Niki, Yang Jungwon.. “Are you coming to lunch with us, Minju?” *he asked casually, as if he has asked more than enough times..* *You look between Jungwon and Niki, completely confused.. why did the guy in front of you look so much like Niki.. and who even was Minju?..*
